An old man sat under the shade of a tall building and for some time he breathed quietly watching aimlessly bodies rush by from left to right and right to left. This one going to work, that one getting to school, this one meeting someone and that one opening a shop.
A million thoughts rush by even though only a thousand souls pass; yet not one of those thoughts that passed said to self, “How do I feel right now?” and there was no acknowledgment from within and no voice was heard to quiet the mind of a thousand passing thoughts.
Suddenly a little boy, no more then 3 years of age flopped next to the old man, smiling as if the sun was shining directly from his face, the mother waiting for the bus as she fiddled with her phone frantically.
“What are you thinking about?” said the little boy
“Nothing!” replied the old man, “I was simply breathing”
“Breathing?” asked the boy innocently
“Yes, I am breathing the sounds and vibrations of the life around me”, said the old man.
The mother had yet to look in the direction of her son.
“Why?” asked the little boy,
“Close your eyes,” said the man, “open your ears and take a deep breath!” the boy did as he was told, “What do you hear?”
“Cars… buses… footsteps… all different types… phone ringing… people talking… child crying… coin dropping… angry man… different languages…”
“Now open your eyes!” said the old man, “What do you see?”
The boy opened his eyes and they sparkled with the answer that surrounded him, “Everyone is busy and moving fast!”
“Good!” replied the old man, “Now how does that make you feel?”
“Nobody will have time to play with me and I will not be able to have fun!” said the boy finally, as the bus pulled up.
The mother finally looked over, gave the old man a strange glance and called her son to join her. The boy leaped up and joined his mother before turning around to the old man saying,
“Except you! I had fun, thank you!”
The old man smiled, “Remember to play that game everyday and you will never be like all the other grown ups, too busy to have fun!”
